    2. Description of Scholarships
The MHSAA scholarship program helps students from Milan and children of alumni further their education after high school.In the year 2005 MHSAA awarded 26 scholarships worth approximately $28,000
Scholarships are open to the natural, adoptive and stepchildren of all MHS alumni.  To be eligible, at least one parent must hold a diploma (not a GED) from Milan High School.  Applications are available through the MHS Principal’s Office and/or from the web site www.milanalumni.org.  Scholarship recipients are determined by the Alumni Association Board of Directors.  The student (preferably) or an immediate family member must be present on Alumni Day to accept the scholarship or it will be forfeited.  These scholarships are valid for twelve months after graduation.  Applications are due by May 2. Return completed applications to the principal’s office or mail to MHS Alumni Association, P.O. Box 223, Milan, TN 38358.

2003 Scholarships Totaled Nearly $24,000

2003 SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS 

Graduating seniors from the Milan High class of 2003 won 24 scholarships worth about $24,000 from the Milan High School Alumni Association at the June 21 reunion event. Winners were: Ashley Knight, Heather Williford, Carter Robinson, Scott Holmes, Rebekah Robbins, Lindsey Gardner, Emily Glisson, Amy Copley, Mary Ferrell. (Standing) Beth Gravenmier, Tom Sullivan, Autumn Mott, Shae Jones, (Back) Gerome Scott, Hunter Wall, (Back) Matt Canada, Jacob Harwell, Tim Meece, Brandon Spain, and Josh Hall. 2002 Scholarship Recipients
 24 scholarships worth $23,550 were presented to 23 members of the Milan High Class of 2002 during Alumni Day festivities June 15. Scholarship winners were: Josh Tuttle, Hunter Jones, James Mills, Kevin Miller, Lindsey Jones, Tracy Autry, Kelly Duncan, Sharon Stewart, Breka Moore, Peter Minges, Clay McCoy, Sarai Cantrell, Nathan Fuchs, Van “Bubba” Alexander, Jr.; Amanda Nelson, Amanda Hopper, Jessica Copous, Kellie Caldwell, Megan Gordon, Victoria Hughes, Jenny Dodson,  Lindy Johnson and Alicia Springer.

SCHOLARSHIPS FUNDED BY MHSAA

Lamar Pittman Scholarship - $1,000
Started in 1957, this scholarship is awarded to a senior based on scholarship, leadership and citizenship.

Andrew D. Holt Scholarship - $1,000
Named in honor of the late Dr. Holt in 1970, this scholarship is selected impartially at the annual alumni meeting. Dr. Holt is President Emeritus, University of Tennessee and was a 1923 graduate of Milan High School.

Johnnie Hale Metcalf Scholarship - $1,000
Since 1972, this award has been presented to a deserving senior from MHS who has given his or her best in a cooperative effort for progress in all phases of school work.

Edith Holt Scholarship - $1,000
Begun in 1975, this scholarship is named in memory of Miss Edith Holt. A Milan graduate, she taught in the Milan school system for 46 years before her retirement.

J.W. Thomas Scholarship - $1,000
Established in 1981, this scholarship is awarded in memory of "Jimmy" W. Thomas, former principal and superintendent in the Milan school system. He served education well in every facet imaginable from 1932 until 1974. Mr. Thomas was made an honorary graduate of the MHS class of 1928.

Lurla B. Daniels Keith Scholarship - $1,000
Established in 1983, this scholarship is awarded to a senior with preference given to pursuance in the education profession. Mrs.. Keith is most remembered for her tireless contributions as secretary to the MHS Alumni Association.

Milton Mayo Scholarship - $1,000
This award was established in 1980 to honor Milton Mayo, who served Milan students many years as a teacher, coach, principal and superintendent.

Wylie Wheeler Scholarship - $1,000
Established in 1997, this award honors Wylie Wheeler for his outstanding contributions to the Milan school system as an educator for many years.

Norris Hassell Scholarship - $1,000
Established in 1989, this scholarship is awarded in memory of Norris Hassell. He served as treasurer of the Milan High School Alumni Association for 27 years, 1959-1986.
 

Laura Rushing Stewart Scholarship - $1,000
Established in 2001, this scholarship honors Laura Rushing Stewart for her many years of dedication and service as treasurer to the association.

Marcelle Stevens Moore Scholarship - $1,000
Established in 2001, this scholarship honors Marcelle Stevens Moore, Class of 1960, for many years of dedicated service as secretary and associate secretary of the alumni association.
 

Ralph Holt Scholarship - $1,000
Established in 2003, this scholarship honors Ralph Holt (1922-2002), a 1939 Milan grad who was a teacher, coach and administrator at Park Avenue School during a 28-year period from 1951 until 1979.

Liz Keaton Ownby - Mary Moore Collins Scholarship - $1,000
Established in 2004, this scholarship honors two alumnae who have been faithful volunteers for Alumni Day many years and together were the MHSAA honorees in 2002. Elizabeth Keaton Ownby (Class of 1959) has devoted a lifetime to Purple Pride and served as MHSAA president in 1988. She was Milan’s Woman of the Year in 1997. Mary Moore Collins (Class of 1962) devoted 34 years to teaching in Milan schools, retiring in 2004.

Rex Tatum Scholarship - $1,000
Established in 2004, this scholarship honors a 1953 MHS graduate and standout athlete who later taught and coached at Milan High. Rex has served the alumni association since 1961 in numerous capacities including a term as president. He spearheaded successful efforts to build our office headquarters and introduces special classes each year. He was the MHSAA honoree in 2003.

Bobbie Pratt Priddy Scholarship - $1,000
Established in 2004, this scholarship is in recognition of our 2004 honoree, Bobbie Pratt Priddy (Class of ’54). A beloved kindergarten teacher in Milan for 31 years, Bobbie Sue has been a faithful church member and dedicated volunteer for many civic groups, including the Milan Alumni Association.

PRIVATELY FUNDED SCHOLARSHIPS

Jeff Hopper Memorial Scholarship - $3,000
Established in 1994 by family and friends in loving memory of Jeff, this scholarship is presented to a student athlete.

Hazel Culver Memorial Scholarship - $2,000
This scholarship is given by Mrs. Culver's son, Dr. C.D. Culver, to a graduate who plans to attend Jackson State Community College, Jackson, TN. The student is selected on the basis of character, ability, need, and the likelihood of success in a chosen field. A grade point average of at least a "B" in high school is required.

Fuchs' Family Scholarship
In May 1995, the Fuchs Family Reunion established a scholarship fund to be presented to a Fuchs' family descendent graduating from Milan High School. This scholarship is not necessarily issued every year.

L.R. and Hassie Powell Scholarship - $5,000
Mr. Robert Powell established an endowment fund to honor his parents who always showed an interest in young people. The Powell Scholarship is given to a student who has shown the most improvement in four years of high school. The recipient is chosen by the MHS faculty.

Robert Lee and Mildred Allen Caldwell Scholarship
In 1994, the heirs of Robert Lee and Mildred Allen Caldwell established a memorial scholarship. This is awarded to a deserving senior from Milan High School who plans to study music or soil and wildlife conservation.

Allie Vee Fly & Martha Louise Blankenship Scholarship
An endowment fund for scholarships was established in 1995 by Allie Vee Fly Blankenship in memory of Mrs. Blankenship and her daughter, Martha Louise Blankenship. 

Christy Fisher Coleman Scholarship
Established in 1999, the Christy Fisher Coleman Scholarship is awarded to a student entering the medical field at Jackson State Community College. This scholarship is a memorial by the family of the late Christy Fisher Coleman, a Milan High graduate. 

Class of 1966 Scholarship
Established in 2003 by graduates in the Class of 1966, this scholarship honors the memory of all deceased classmates.

Jimmy Dyer Scholarship
Friends and family established a scholarship in memory of Jimmy Dyer, a 1961 graduate of Milan High School.

Deonza Spain Pafford Scholarship
In 2002, friends and family established a scholarship in memory of the late Deonza Spain Pafford, an active volunteer in school and church events for many years.

Betty Fisher Short Memorial Scholarship - $750
Established by her family in 2004, the Betty Fisher Short Memorial Scholarship ($500) honors Betty Short, a mother of four and former teaching assistant in Milan schools who loved children and valued education and the arts. She died in 1988 from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), commonly called Lou Gehrig’s disease. The scholarship is awarded to a deserving graduate planning to attend Union University, with priority given to students who plan to study healthcare, nursing, medicine or science.
